As a contact lens wearer, additional tests and measurements are done for you that are necessary to make sure your eyes are healthy, that your lenses fit properly, and to ensure that you are seeing as well as possible. Contact lens professional fees are for the extra testing and time taken by the staff and doctor each year to properly evaluate your contact lenses and eye health.
The indirect microscope is a good example of an additional test used to examine the fit of your contact lens and the health of the cornea. Secondly, prescription measurements are done which are different than those done for glasses.
Is this Part of my Annual Eye Exam?
These contact lens-related tests are done in addition to the usual eye examination tests. These are procedures that only need to be done for contact lens wearers, not for patients who don’t wear contact lenses.
Doesn’t my Insurance Cover Contact Lens Professional Fees?
It depends on your plan’s coverage. Most insurance plans cover a routine eye exam which determines your glasses prescription and evaluates your eye health. Contact lens services are separate procedures that often are not covered by insurance.
Contact Lens Wearers to Take Proper Precautions
Warnings from the U.S. Food and Drug administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about increased reports of a serious eye fungus among Americans, doctors of optometry from the American Optometric Association’s (AOA) Contact Lens and Cornea Section urge contact lens wearers to take proper precautions. According to the AOA, clean and safe handling of contact lenses is one of the most important measures Americans can take to protect their sight.
